Amreeka is a timeless classic that brilliantly illustrates the lives and experiences of an Arab American family and their journey from the ‘old country’ in Palestine to the United States. The film was directed by Cherien Dabis, who is possibly the only living Arab director that has consistently managed to make movies that are able to mix humor with tragedy in a way that humanizes the Arab American identity. Although the film was initially released in 2009, it remains very pertinent to experiences by Arab immigrants today. This timeless quality in films is rare, and I for one look forward to its re-release so that it can be re-discovered by a whole new generation. — RAMZI SALTI

Synopsis
Amreeka chronicles the adventures of Muna, a single mother who leaves the Palestinian West Bank with Fadi, her teenage son, with dreams of an exciting future in the promised land of small town Illinois. In America, as her son navigates high school hallways the way he used to move through military checkpoints, the indomitable Muna scrambles together a new life cooking up falafel burgers as well as hamburgers at the local White Castle.
