DREAMS OF HIND AND CAMILIA (1988)

Directed by: Mohamed Khan

It’s 1988. Cairo. Two women, Hind and Camilia. Their destinies tied by exhaustion and a Sisyphean fate of disappointment. They move through life under the weight of almost-failure, poverty, and the slow, crippling violence of patriarchy. In their search for a more tender life, Ahlam (Dreams) is born, a fragile promise of a second start, maybe even redemption. But in the end, we never know what really became of them.

It’s 2005. Same city. Two other women, Yasmine and Joumana, chasing love, happiness, and a sense of self. But now, there is more lightness. Even their men are softer. This time, we know they eventually find solace in their own ways.

I keep wondering if, in Khan’s universe, Yasmine and Joumana are another version of Hind and Camilia. Perhaps they were reborn into a slightly softer version of the same city, a slightly better social class, and maybe this time, as a reconciliation, they find their catharsis. — YOSRA EZZAT ELMALLAH

Synopsis

In the bustling heart of Cairo, two women from the margins forge an unlikely bond. Hind (Aida Riyad), a young widow forced into domestic work by her exploitative uncle, crosses paths with Kamelia (Naglaa Fathy), a divorced housekeeper carrying the weight of her dependent, addicted brother. Struggling against poverty, exploitation, and the judgment of those around them, they fight to carve out a life of dignity — Hind through a fragile romance with the charming but dangerous thief Eid (Ahmed Zaki), and Kamelia through sheer resilience in the face of family pressure.

When betrayal, prison, and a hidden stash of stolen money collide, the women seize a fleeting chance at freedom, escaping to the seaside city of Alexandria with dreams of a better life. But in a world that preys on the vulnerable, their hopes are as fragile as the bonds they share, and one cruel twist of fate threatens to undo it all.
