FARHA (2021)
The power of Farha is instantly felt by the viewer, who experiences the Nakba through the eyes of a Palestinian girl watching its horrors unfold through a hole in the storage room she is locked in. Inspired by true events, director Darin J. Sallam masterfully captures the trauma of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine by depicting the harsh end of childhood for a once-thriving Palestinian girl with big dreams for her education. The audience is trapped with Farha – vested in her struggle for survival and haunted by the unspeakable scenes that play out before her. There are only a few Palestinian films that have tackled the Nakba in the drama format, and even fewer as authentically as Farha – hence the attacks it received when it was first released. Audiences globally rallied behind this film, catapulting it into being one of the most important Arab films of its time. — DANIA MAJID
