THE EXTRAS (1993)

THE EXTRAS (1993)

Directed by: Nabil Maleh

The Extras is a love story in a world, in this case Damascus, where romance is looked upon as frivolous, something that stands in opposition to family duty and strict social norms. It is not an epic tragedy around rival classes or religions, but rather an intimate, often claustrophobic story of two working class people trying to find two hours to be alone. It not so subtly serves as an allegory to the Assad regime, during which the secret police guaranteed privacy was not an option. Much like daily life, the couple’s attempts to be together are both comical and heartbreaking. — ALIA YUNIS
