Real-life father and son Mohammad and Saleh Bakri play respectively the divorced, 60-something Abu Shadi, and Shadi, an architect now living in Italy who visits Nazareth to deliver his sister’s wedding invitations to friends and family. On the surface, this is an agreeable father-and-son road trip, with some genuine laugh out loud moments. As the film plays out, it develops a real depth as Jacir manages to cover and explore – through their conversation and visits to the wider community – intergenerational conflict, the changing Palestinian political and geographical landscapes, the uncomfortable tensions between the diaspora and those “at home”, and of course, the ever-present looming shadow of the occupation. It’s both a genuinely entertaining and amusing watch, largely thanks to the acerbic and incisive dialogue and the natural chemistry between the lead actors, both experienced and excellent, and a nuanced exploration of Palestinian life and everything it entails, without ever being on the nose. — ABLA KANDALAFT
