Where Do We Go Now? is a seminal work of Arab cinema. Set in a Lebanese village and following the religious tensions between its Muslim and Christian population, the film is a moving portrait of the sectarian struggles that have long plagued Lebanon. Moving, heartbreaking, and funny in equal measure, Nadine Labaki’s film finds its heart in the relationships between its characters and the women’s ability to maintain their humor amidst harrowing situations. The film’s themes, of unity amidst religious strife, female solidarity, and how ridiculous fighting can be, are just as pertinent now as they were upon the film’s release. The ensemble cast — led by Labaki, and including Claude Baz Moussawbaa and Layla Hakim — is excellent. Where Do We Go Now? wonderfully (and comically) captures the pains of Lebanon’s people while also celebrating the beauty of coming together. — MAE ABDULBAKI
