Terrorism and Kebab (1992)
Terrorism and Kebab (1992)
The chaos reverberating throughout the black comedy Terrorism and Kebab ends when Ahmed, an ordinary man played by mega-star Adel Emam, risks his life in order to regain his dignity, negotiating for his rights, as well as rights of all Egyptian citizens, at the Mogamma el Tahrir government building in Cairo. With every rewatch, the value of the film increases: you root for Ahmed and his compatriots as they take injustice into their own hands, and yearn for the moment where everyday citizens have the chance to change their circumstances and negotiate with power. Like Ahmed, you gaze at Tahrir Square at the end of the film with a smile of longing, and alongside him, return to a daily life riddled with struggle and hardship, with the satisfaction of knowing that you tasted freedom, even if it did not last long. — HOSAM FAHMY
